Sunday 11 February, 2nd Sunday Before Lent

Intercessions:

We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Betty Carney and Sue Lloyd (11th), Eileen Wilson and Nahdir Jan (12th), Giles Osborne (15th) and Peggy Langdale-Smith (17th).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

St Mary’s notices can be sent to the Parish Office at (info@stmarysmoseley.co.uk), or by phone: 0121 449 2243 (mornings) by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Voicemail messages can be left at any time. Also see http://www.stmarysmoseley.co.uk.

Loop

St Mary’s has a loop system for the hard of hearing, in the centre block of seats. Turn your hearing aid to the “T” setting.

St Anne’s Electoral Roll

Before the Annual Meetings on Sunday 25 March, we have to prepare a totally new roll. Anyone, whether or not they are on the present roll must apply to be included. An applicant has to be baptised, aged over 16 and either live in the parish or attend worship regularly. People who are ill or infirm but would attend if they were able can still apply. Forms can be obtained from Eric Dwyer or a church warden, and need to be returned by end of February. Any questions or problems please ask Eric (449 1610)

The Social Committee

We would like to thank everyone who generously donated refreshments for Jeremy’s licensing Service. It was indeed a wonderful spread! Please collect dishes etc. from the kitchen at St Mary’s.

Jan Miller

First Aid Training

On Saturdays 24 Feb and 10 March at St Mary’s, open to all, but specially for those working with children and young people; please sign form at back of either church and indicate your preferred date.

Bells

To welcome Revd Jeremy Dussek a quarter peal of Plain Bob triples was rung in 47 minutes, with Sharon Wall ringing in her first quarter on eight at Moseley.

Lis Sparrow runs Brownies in Moseley

She says that this year Sainsbury’s have allowed Brownie Packs to collect their active kids’ vouchers. She can then get balls, bean bags, aprons, parachute etc. (for parachute games not for her to escape with) for free if she gets enough vouchers. A lot of you will committed to a certain school but if have not, or have some spare, please could you let her have them?

Emmaus Enquirers Course

Beginning shortly for adults and young people. Open to all who want to find out more about the Christian faith and particularly those seeking Confirmation. Please pick up a flyer at the back of church or see the Ministry team for more details

From Jeremy

Continued thanks to all who have sent cards and best wishes on my appointment and arrival here; it feels like Christmas all over again. Please continue to keep me in your prayers as we look forward to our future together.

Communication

In the next three months I will be listening and taking stock of what is currently happening here as we prepare to become a United Benefice. this will mean my time is spent between both Churches. It is important therefore that you are aware of how to contact me.

The telephone number for the Vicarage remains 449 1459, although it may be easier to contact the Parish Office 449 2243 if I am not available to answer your call. This is especially important on a Friday which is my day off.

Good communication is vital if we are to build a strong relationship together. To enable this to happen, for the first three months on Mondays at 5:00 p.m. in St Mary’s, and Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. at St Anne’s, I have set aside a space – Time to Talk. If you are either excited or not happy with how things are at Church then come and talk. It is much better to do this than potentially receiving letters of dissatisfaction when a misunderstanding, lack of information or disagreement may have occurred. It also gives a time for us to talk and pray when we offer the issue or situation to God. If you are unable to make this time please make an appointment to see me at a mutually convenient time. It is also important that I am informed when someone is ill, in hospital or dying. Please do let me know and appropriate care can be provided.

Thought for the Week from Mick Perrier

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

In our two readings today we meet God the Father and God the Son both displaying their command of the natural world. Furthermore, we are shown humankind as dependent on God for our very existence and continuing security.

The Old Testament lesson presents God as the Creator, putting man and woman into the world he has made. The passage from Luke’s Gospel shows God the Son, using the same power over nature to quell the Galilean storm.

Not only this, but in the first lesson God trusts Man, putting him and his created mate in a world which was very good. However, they will betray this trust, resulting in their expulsion from Eden. Luke, meanwhile, describes God in Jesus as displaying just that dependability which was so singularly lacking in our antecedents. When weak humanity was in peril, Jesus could even still the waves to restore them.

The Old Testament’s frequent ironic allusions to the “gods” who sleep are here transmuted – the sleeping Jesus may appear to abandon his people at their point of need, but we are shown that the opposite is the truth (hence the rebuke) – Jesus responds, not from his own fear but in response to that of others. Let “Trust in the Lord” be a very apposite mantra for our daily living.

Collect for today: 2nd Sunday Before Lent

Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever.
