Poverty Action Sunday

Intercessions:

We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Ann Morgan (18th), Isabel Sallis (21st) and Mary Brookstein (23rd).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

St Mary’s notices can be sent to the Parish Office at (info@stmarysmoseley.co.uk), or by phone: 0121 449 2243 (mornings) by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Voicemail messages can be left at any time. Also see http://www.stmarysmoseley.co.uk.

St Anne’s notices can be sent to Revd Rosemary Donovan at info@st-annes-moseley.org.uk, or by phone: 0121 449 1071 by Thursday. Also see http://www.st-annes-moseley.org.uk.

Loop

St Mary’s has a loop system for the hard of hearing, in the centre block of seats. Turn your hearing aid to the “T” setting.

From Jeremy

Continued thanks to all who have sent cards and best wishes on my appointment and arrival here; it feels like Christmas all over again. Please continue to keep me in your prayers as we look forward to our future together.

Communication

In the next three months I will be listening and taking stock of what is currently happening here as we prepare to become a United Benefice. This will mean my time is spent between both Churches. It is important therefore that you are aware of how to contact me. The telephone number for the Vicarage remains 449 1459, although it may be easier to contact the Parish Office 449 2243 if I am not available to answer your call. This is especially important on a Friday, which is my day off.

Good communication is vital if we are to build a strong relationship together. To enable this to happen, for the first three months on Mondays at 5:00 p.m. in St Mary’s, and Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. at St Anne’s, I have set aside a space – Time to Talk. If you are either excited or not happy with how things are at Church then come and talk. It is much better to do this than potentially receiving letters of dissatisfaction when a misunderstanding, lack of information or disagreement may have occurred. It also gives a time for us to talk and pray when we offer the issue or situation to God. If you are unable to make this time please make an appointment to see me at a mutual time. It is also important that I am informed when someone is ill, in hospital or dying. Please do let me know and appropriate care can be provided.

Marking Lent in Church

During the season of Lent in Church buildings, it is a custom to cover or take down images to reflect the spiritual ‘desert’ experience of the Season. Some of the banners and images may change this week and in the Lady Chapel at St Mary’s the arrangement of the furniture will be developed in order to accommodate the Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. Faith in the Future Course.

Lent Booklets

Following on from the success of last year, Birmingham Diocese is promoting Love Life Live Lent 2 which is about being neighbours. The 50 actions for Lent 2007 focus on making friends with the ‘stranger’ and breaking down barriers within our communities. Two versions of the booklet have been produced, one for adults and one for younger people. Pick up a copy today!

St Mary’s Electoral Roll

This year we have to prepare a new electoral roll. Anyone who has been baptised, is 16 years or more, resident in the parish and/or a regular worshipper at St Mary’s is eligible to be on the electoral roll. If you meet these criteria and are willing to commit yourself to St Mary’s, please take a form, complete, and return it as soon as possible. Forms are available from Jenny Livermore, electoral roll officer, the churchwardens or the Parish Office during the week.

First Aid Training

On Saturdays 24 February & 10 March at St Mary’s. Open to all, but specially for those working with children and young people. Please sign the list at the back of either church and indicate your preferred date.

Thought for the Week from Hansa Shah

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

Corinthians 3:12 – 4:2

In recent months the issue of head-scarves and veils has featured much in the news, exercising our minds and often generating impassioned debate. Whilst writing to the Corinthians, St Paul too refers to the veil, but the veil he is talking about is not a tangible one. He likens the old Law of Moses to the veil and urges his readers to cast it aside. Through Christ, he tells them, comes freedom of spirit, which is like the unveiling of the face. No matter which side of the debate we might be on, in relation to the tangible veil, St Paul leaves us in no doubt that he would have us go about with “unveiled faces” reflecting the Lord’s glory through Christ.

Collect for today: Next before Lent

Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
