Intercessions:

We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Clementine Macliver (27th), Gwenda Jones and Clare Haynes (28th), Louis Bean (29th) and Daphne Baker (2nd).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

St Mary’s notices can be sent to the Parish Office at (info@stmarysmoseley.co.uk), or by phone: 0121 449 2243 (mornings) by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Voicemail messages can be left at any time. Also see http://www.stmarysmoseley.co.uk.

Lis Sparrow runs Brownies in Moseley.

She says that this year Sainsbury’s have allowed Brownie Packs to collect their active kids’ vouchers. She can then get balls, bean bags, aprons, parachute) for ‘free’ if she gets enough vouchers. A lot of you will be committed to a certain school, but if are not, or have some spare, please could you let her have them?

Message from St Mary’s Wardens

The church path may be slippery because of the wet weather; if anyone has a jet-wash which they could let the church use in order to clean it we would be most grateful.  Please speak to one of the wardens

Marking Lent in Church

During the season of Lent in Church buildings, it is a custom to cover or take down images to reflect the spiritual ‘desert’ experience of the Season. Some of the banners and images may change this week and in the Lady Chapel at St Mary’s the arrangement of the furniture will be developed in order to accommodate the Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. Faith in the Future course.

Lent Booklets

Following on from the success of last year, Birmingham Diocese is promoting Love Life Live Lent 2, which is about being neighbours. The 50 actions for Lent 2007 focus on making friends with the ‘stranger’ and breaking down barriers within our communities. Two versions of the booklet have been produced, one for adults and one for younger people. Pick up a copy today!

St Mary’s Electoral Roll

This year we have to prepare a new electoral roll. Anyone who has been baptised, is aged 16 years or more, resident in the parish and/or a regular worshipper at St Mary’s is eligible to be on the electoral roll. If you meet these criteria and are willing to commit yourself to St Mary’s, please take a form and complete and return it as soon as possible. Forms are available from Jenny Livermore, electoral roll officer, the churchwardens, or the Parish Office during the week.

Fairtrade Fortnight, 26 February – 11 March

It really can make a difference in changing the lives of millions of people in the developing world. There are some flyers available at the back of each church, or visit www.fairtrade.org.uk.

Thought for the week from Revd Rosemary Donovan

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

There are lots of different choices in life. Sometimes the choice is obvious, at other times we need to decide on the best course of action from a variety of options, and at other times our personal convictions will determine what is the appropriate decision for us. Choices, then, are not always easy, but when we are faced with the need to choose we should look back to the 40 days Jesus faced in the wilderness. For at the end of that time he too was faced with difficult choices. Lent calls us to take a long and hard look at our lives, to consider the choices we have made, but if, like Jesus, we are ready to seek God’s guidance and listen to his voice, we will find the wisdom we need to choose between what’s right and what’s wrong.

Collect for today: Sunday 25 February 2007, 1st Sunday of Lent

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
