Marking Lent in Church

During the season of Lent in Church buildings, it is a custom to cover or take down images to reflect the spiritual ‘desert’ experience of the Season. Some of the banners and images have been temporarily removed to reflect this, and in the Lady Chapel at St Mary’s the arrangement of the furniture will be developed in order to accommodate the Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. Faith in the Future course.

Thought for the Week from The Revd Joan Griffin

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

The story is told of a little boy who wanted to meet God. He thought it might be a long journey, so he packed a suitcase with bags of crisps and some tins of coke and started on his way. As he was walking through the park he met an old woman. She was sitting on a bench just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat next to her and opened his suitcase. He started to have a drink, when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry, so he offered her some crisps. She ate some and gave him a friendly smile, so he offered her a coke. Again she smiled. They sat there all the afternoon, eating, drinking and smiling, but they never said a word. The sun began to set, and the boy realised how tired he felt, so he got up to leave; but he first turned and gave the old woman a hug before going home.

When the boy’s mother opened the door to him, she saw a look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you look so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God and she’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen”.

Meanwhile, the old woman returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of serenity on her face. He asked her, “Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?” She replied, “I ate crisps in the park with God and do you know, he’s much younger that I expected.”

Too often we underestimate the power of a chance encounter. This week have lunch with God… Oh, and don’t forget the crisps!

Collect for today: Sunday 4 March 2007, 2nd Sunday of Lent

Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth, that they may return to the way of righteousness: grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion, that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
