Crown of Thorns The Logo of St Mary’s Church

Sunday 11 March 2007, 3rd Sunday of Lent

Intercessions:

We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Max Watson (12th), Rebecca Light and David Ramsell (13th), David Hodgson and Debbie Morris (14th), Martyn Johnson (16th), and belated good wishes to Andrew Cartmell (4th).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

St Mary’s notices can be sent to the Parish Office at (info@stmarysmoseley.co.uk), or by phone: 0121 449 2243 (mornings) by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Voicemail messages can be left at any time. Also see http://www.stmarysmoseley.co.uk.

Loop

St Mary’s has a loop system for the hard of hearing, in the centre block of seats. Turn your hearing aid to the “T” setting.

St Mary’s Electoral Roll

This year we have to prepare a new electoral roll. Anyone who has been baptised, is 16 years or more, resident in the parish and/or a regular worshipper at St Mary’s is eligible to be on the electoral roll. If you meet these criteria and are willing to commit yourself to St Mary’s, please take a form, complete, and return it as soon as possible. Forms are available from Jenny Livermore, electoral roll officer, the churchwardens, or the Parish Office during the week.

Charity Concert

The Nova Wind Quintet (clarinettist Sharon Wall) is putting on a concert in aid of “South American Missionary Society” on Sunday 11 March at 3:00 p.m. at St Augustine’s Church Edgbaston. Retiring collection and refreshments afterwards.

Young People

Reminder: can I have monies and booking forms in for the 24/7 prayer event in Holy Week and Greenbelt ASAP.

Thanks, Rosemary

Kindle Theatre

Members of the Birmingham-based Kindle Theatre Company will be rehearsing at St Mary’s from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays for eight weeks beginning 15 March. The church will be open to the public as usual from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Their production In My Father’s House will be presented in church on Saturday 26 May following a two week tour.

Prayer Cards

There is a new Daily Office card to remind you of the times of mid-week services – why not pick one up today?

Marking Lent in Church.

During the season of Lent in Church buildings it is a custom to cover or take down images to reflect the spiritual ’desert’ experience of the Season. Some of the banners and images have been temporarily removed to reflect this, and in the Lady Chapel at St Mary’s the arrangement of the furniture will be developed in order to accommodate the Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. Faith in the Future course.

Bishop’s Lent Appeal

During Lent we are again asked as a Parish to donate to the Church Urban Fund. Contributions may be gift-aided using the Challenging Poverty envelopes. Please hand them in at the back of the church from Mothering Sunday to Palm Sunday. Thank you for your help.

Congratulations

A number of choristers of St Mary’s Robed Choir will receive awards and promotions at next Sunday’s 10:00 a.m. service. All children present at the service will have the opportunity to share in this aspect with members of the Choir.

Church paths at St Mary’s

We have had the kind offer of a jet wash to clean the paths. If you could help to wash the paths please speak to one of the wardens.

Thought for the Week from Elisabeth Leicester

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

My gardening tends to be of the windowsill variety, so I’m no expert on fig trees. But then the story in Luke 13: 1-9 is not about fig trees, but about us and repentance.

Like the fig tree, we don’t have all the time in the world. Perhaps the gardener may represent Jesus who pleads for a second chance for us and offers us help. Lent is an excellent opportunity to invite Jesus to dig round in our lives with us, and discover the things that militate against our fruitfulness, and those that promote it. Then we may have the joy of a good harvest of fruit with which to please God and help others.

Happy gardening for Lent.

Collect for today: Sunday 11 March 2007, 3rd Sunday of Lent

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
