We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Caroline Stocks and Julia Griffin (19th), Simon Blakey and Thomas Barber (20th), Cathie Carey and Christopher Ball (21st), Chris Pearce (22nd), and belated good wishes to Jeremy Dussek for the 16th and Oliver Maclean for the 11th.
The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Thanks, RosemaryAs we journey through Lent, on Passion Sunday we mark a change in our pilgrimage heading towards Good Friday. To express this in St Mary’s we will be removing the hangings from behind the high altar to signify the desolation of our Lord as he prepared to be stripped for the Cross. (During this time, the curtains will be cleaned and prepared for Easter).

The parables of The Lost Sheep, The Lost Coin and The Lost Son seem to me to be all illustrations of how much God appeals to us all to be glad when we discover that we can be reconciled to God through the love of Jesus. Sometimes I feel we are too ready to criticise those Preachers and their congregations who visibly express their joy in worshipping together, by calling them “Happy Clappies” in a disparaging way. Such people are usually very willing to share how they felt a change had taken place in their lives and a true thankfulness for reconciliation with God. Perhaps sometimes they have felt rejected and let down by the more orthodox style of worship which can often seem sterile and false. I believe in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians he is asking us to remember that because Jesus was truly human, but resisted all the temptations that we are subjected to, we can trust him to be our saviour and through him to achieve reconciliation with God. There is no place where his message cannot be heard providing I am truly willing to change and place my heart in his hands. The key surely is that we must in humility welcome the chance to worship together with other Christians in thanking God for his Son and the wonderful world we live in. How joyful it would be this Easter if, as a nation we could all find the courage to say, “No!” to the refurbishment of Trident. Without a useable weapon system we could then truly place our trust in Jesus to save us from ourselves in our desire to destroy our home, God’s gift to mankind. Such an act would surely reconcile us to the Father of all.
Merciful Lord, absolve your people from their offences, that through your bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the chains of those sins which by our frailty we have committed; grant this, heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
