We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Cheryl Reid and Malcolm McDonald (1st), Suzanne Smith (2nd), Edward Barber (3rd), Laura Dowell, Peter Magson and Jennifer Wilson (4th), Jan Miller (5th), and Matthew Bates and Rebecca Isaacs (6th).
The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Please could you spare an hour (or more) to help make the churchyard beautiful for Easter? We are hoping to have another working party on Saturday 7 April from 10:00 a.m. If you can help please ring Parish Office.
As we enter Holy Week we continue the journey from triumph to tragedy on Good Friday. To express this in St. Mary’s the hangings from behind the high altar have been removed to signify the desolation of our Lord as he prepared to be stripped for the Cross. (During this time, the curtains will be cleaned and prepared for Easter). On Thursday night, the altar frontal and other images will be taken as we prepare for the scene of desolation on Good Friday. Prepare then for the Visual Contrast at Easter!
Holy Saturday: This most ancient of Holy Day services is probably one of the most joyous and beautiful liturgies of the Church Year and is the principal celebration of the resurrection of our Lord. In the service, rich in symbolism, we move from the darkness of the tomb to the glorious light of Christ. Practically at St Anne’s we will listen to the mighty acts of God in the scriptures and then with the Easter Paschal Candle, take the New Light of Easter through Moseley to celebrate the resurrection with the first Communion of Easter. Fizz will follow afterwards! Come and celebrate this journey!
On Good Friday we build the bare garden to represent Golgotha, (the place where they crucified Christ). On the Saturday (Easter Eve/Holy Saturday) we decorate the area with spring flowers to represent the risen Christ. Finally on Low Sunday (the Sunday after Easter when, traditionally the congregation numbers were low) the garden will be dismantled.
During Lent we are again asked as a Parish to donate to the Church Urban Fund. Contributions may be gift-aided using the challenging poverty envelopes. Please hand them in at the back of the church today. Thank you for your help.

It does not seem a year ago that I wrote the homily for Palm Sunday, 2006. Here I am again.
A few weeks ago, I took a flight to a funeral in Ireland. As I was boarding, I noticed the plane was called Butterfly Baby. On an early, cold, wet morning on the way to my favourite aunt's funeral I was not impressed. During the service, the minister reflected on the significance of the butterfly in Christian symbolism. I had been looking around the church and had noted butterflies in the stained glass. She told us that caterpillars crawl across leaves, die and wake up as resplendent butterflies. The joke she told was: Two caterpillars look up and see a butterfly. One says to the other, “You'll never get me up in one of those”.
Jesus knew as he rode into town, his path strewn with leaves, that he was going to his death. He knew also he would wake as if from sleep and belief in Him would also save us. He rode through a celebration knowing what was approaching. Nescitis Horam — “You know not the hour” — Jesus knew His.
As Easter approaches, my thoughts turn to mortality and rebirth. We should celebrate each day and make each day special. We may crawl along but we can contribute so much if we are positive and rejoice in every day we are given. There is a song of my childhood by Burl Ives, Perry Como or whoever — You've Got High Hopes. As I flew back to my family I reflected differently on Butterfly Baby. God moves in mysterious ways…
Almighty and everlasting God, who in your tender love towards the human race sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross: grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
