Over the last few days, I’ve been receiving quite a few cards from old parishioners in Fareham. They’ve only been in interregnum two months but already they seem to be missing me! Some parishioners are feeling rather lost with no one to relate to and wonder whether anyone will ever come. (I expect some of you may remember that feeling over the last 2 years.) The Parish Representatives in Fareham though are interviewing candidates on Thursday 19 April and in a rather ghastly circular this Easter, I’ve replied back telling them to wait; soon there will be a new Vicar with a whole load of ideas for them to grapple with.
I’ve sent cards using the analogy of what happened to Mary Magdalene and her friends to help them look forward. After the person that they had loved and followed had gone, Mary cried and began to lose hope; and yet suddenly Christ in full resurrected glory appeared in front of her. Not only was this unexpected, but in clinging on to the memories of the past, she virtually failed to understand and recognise her leader whom she had so faithfully served. I’ve said to my old parishioners that they must be prepared to receive someone who will not only look different but lead them forward in a new way; it is time they let go of some of the fond memories and this Easter look forward with hope to what God may be ready to present them.
Letting go of the past is often very difficult especially when we want to remember the ‘good old days’ when everything seemed to go well. The joy of the resurrection message is that the future can be even better. The challenge for us is whether we like Mary Magdalene will expect it to be in the same format or be prepared to discover the risen power of Christ in a new way or guise. The Easter Season runs for over six weeks and in early May, Canon Peter Howell Jones, our Diocesan Missioner will be asking us to discover where we can find Christ and aspects of the Resurrection in Moseley today. At the end of the season on Sunday 20 May (Ascensiontide) he will be drawing us corporately together on our Vision Day, to bring our experiences and open our minds to discover further signs of the Resurrection for us to develop and share for our future. So embrace the Resurrection Story here today in St Mary’s and St Anne’s, but be ready to continue to look for the continuing revelation of Christ in and around us; may we may be open to recognise and serve him on our Emmaus Road and discover his presence and voice to guide us on our journey ahead. Happy Easter!
Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and in all eternity.
