Thought for the week by Johkim Meikle

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

In some ways it is comforting and certainly chastening to see how relevant today’s readings can be for us now as they were 2000 years ago. The comfort is in the knowledge that we are still the same, imperfect human beings, trying to do our best, and the chastening thing is how, despite our best intentions, we are as capable of missing the point, as our early fellow Christians were.

Two messages strike me: Jesus’s words to the Seventy-two, “Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven”, and Paul’s statement to the Galatians, “Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything. What counts is a new creation.” From these words I find a prayer for us as we try to discern our way forward as a united benefice in Moseley. Help us Lord to be aware of the seductive power of distractions, to guard against getting caught up in matters of power, or concerns with success or fear of failure; but help us to remember always the nearness of your kingdom and our joy as your servants in serving and participating in it’s ever renewing creation.

Collect for today: Sunday 8 July 2007, 5th Sunday after Trinity

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified: hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people, that in their vocation and ministry they may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory of your name; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
