We are sorry Stephen was not included last week, but unfortunately his name was not on our list — is yours?

Today we will be celebrating St Anne’s Patronal Festival, but you may notice that the collect for today is actually for Anne and Joachim. What do we know about them? In fact their names are not mentioned in the Bible, and first appear in the apocryphal ‘Gospel of James’ where they are named as the parents of the Virgin Mary. In Hebrew Anne, (meaning grace), and Hannah are the same name, and it would appear that there are other parallels with the story of Hannah and Samuel. Like Hannah and her husband, Anne and Joachim were childless for many years until at last their prayers were answered. Mary was born, and like Samuel, her life was dedicated to the service of God in preparation for the important work He had for her to do.
Today is also the feast day for Mary Magdalene of whom, unlike Anne and Joachim, much is known from the Gospels. Perhaps most significantly she was at the foot of the Cross, found the empty tomb and was the first to witness the Risen Christ.
A quick glance at Exciting Holiness, sub-titled “Collects and Readings for the Festivals and Lesser Festivals of the Church of England”, shows the rich mix of ‘saints’ throughout history commemorated each month. Another July saint was St Swithin. As any good Winchester school child should be able to tell you, Swithin was a Saxon bishop of Winchester. He was a pious and well-loved priest with the common touch and expressed the wish to be buried outside where people would walk across his grave, and rain fall on it. This was done, but just over 100 years after his death, on 15 July his remains were moved into the Cathedral. On that day it rained and rained. According to legend, if it rains on St Swithin’s Day it will rain for the next 40 days. Happy Patronal Festival!
Lord God of Israel, who bestowed such grace on Anne and Joachim that their daughter Mary grew up obedient to your word and made ready to be the mother of your Son: help us to commit ourselves in all things to your keeping, and grant us the salvation you promised to your people; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
