Easter Daffodils The Logo of St Mary’s Church

Sunday 29 July 2007, Eighth Sunday after Trinity

Intercessions:

We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Olive Bishop and Abigail Rees (29th), Dorothy Pridham, Mark Stammers, Michael Wood and Peter Newcombe (1st), Stephen Southall (3rd) and Alison Johnson (4th).

Flowers in the Lady Chapel at St Mary’s are given in memory of Sybil Guest on the anniversary of the internment of her ashes in the Garden of Remembrance.

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

Communications Audit

Following the recent Communications Audit the full results will be displayed on our websites and notice boards. Anyone wishing to feed in ideas about pew-sheet, magazine, website, notice boards should keep an eye out for meetings and contact people involved As a result of a meeting of those delegated to look at communications at St Mary’s both the entrance and some internal noticeboards have been changed. This is a temporary measure as we now start to look at how we can make these areas and noticeboards more welcoming, bright and easier to view. Please bear with us over the next few months as we carefully develop this. Any comments or suggestions should be sent to the Communications Audit team c/o the parish office.

3D Course for Developing Disciples

Thought for the week by Jet Whittaker

Hosea 1:2-10; Luke 11:1-13

For the past four weeks two subjects have been much on my mind: Lloyd Webber’s Joseph’s Amazing Tecnicolour Dreamcoat and Rowan Williams’ Tokens of Trust. There are no prizes for guessing the connection!

For the festival day of St Peter’s I was asked to join a small group of singers (they must be optimists!) to sing four songs from Joseph’s Amazing Tecnicolour Dreamcoat. The song, Close every door to me, was for me the most Jewish and touching. Its ending, We have been promised a land of our own, shows absolute trust that God keeps his promises. The reading from Hosea gives the impression that God watches people and meets out severe punishment for wrong-doing. Great things are promised, but I could not help wondering if these promises could be revoked for future wrong-doings. The reading from St Luke has a different feel to it. Jesus teaches the Lord’s prayer and says that God will open the door when people knock. It is again a matter of trust. I had Jacob down as a prophet but learned that he was a patriarch. Yet he said that God spoke to him. His credentials are not very good, so how much trust do we put in him? All this set me thinking: in day to day life how do we know who is trustworthy and who is not? I suspect that we observe people to see if what they say matches what they do and then gradually come to a decision.

Do we reach absolute trust in God in a series of steps as it were, or is it a deep seated, instinctive recognition of the Truth?

Collect for today: Sunday 29 July 2007, Eighth Sunday after Trinity

Almighty Lord and everlasting God, we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of your laws and the _works of your commandments; that through your most mighty protection, both here and-ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
