Thought for the week by Jenny Allen

“While there’s life there’s hope” Colossians 3:1-11 and Luke 12:13-21

As I write this homily my thoughts stray to many of my fellow countrymen who are currently cut off from normal life by the floods which have engulfed many parts of the UK including the Midlands. Most are facing a devastating change form everyday routine. The rain came not “soft and refreshing”, but falling like spears thrown from the sky. Turning mild flowing rivers into raging torrents of water. Towns and villages cut off from one another. Whilst most were saved, many are coping with no clean water for drinking, washing etc. I, like many who live in the British Isles, have never faced what it must be like to face life threatening situations or to lose all one’s possessions in such dire circumstances. Such events can bring out the worst and the best in the human spirit.

In the second reading Jesus reminds us that careful conservation of goods, reliance on services like piped water, or even life itself should never be taken for granted. St Paul in his letter to the Colossians asks the new converts to Christianity to remain focussed on the triumphs of the spirit and disregard earthly concerns. One news story I thought was a shining example of someone who valued her life more than her property was that of the elderly woman clutching her dog, and having been rescued declared, “I am just so thankful that we are both still alive”, whilst another story told of a man who refused to be rescued because his elderly neighbour did not want to leave her house, so he stayed and was looking after her, also keeping an eye on his neighbour’s property and pets left behind. Both of the above are just two examples of many similar accounts which seem to illustrate our Lord’s declaration to, “give thanks for life and to love thy neighbour as thyself”.

Collect for today: Sunday 5 August 2007, ninth Sunday after Trinity

Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit to be the life and light of your church: open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of the spirit in love and joy and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
