Prayer and Reflection

A prayer for our church: We pray for all who come into our church today; that all who seek you here may find you; and all who find you may serve you day by day. Amen.

We celebrate the birthdays of Naomi Hall, Emily Casstles and Barry Lawrence (30th), Jack Kilby and Vera Harley (2nd), Clare Causton (3rd), and Lavinia Morris, Lorna Wilson and Saul Greenburgh (6th).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

Harvest Services

Next weekend is Harvest Festival. Over the years harvest has diminished in meaning for us city dwellers and we need to find new and creative ways of celebrating this important festival. This year in Moseley we have decided to focus on the plight of rural communities in Africa using materials from the organisation Harvest Help. They need us to provide gifts of self reliance so that poor and suffering communities can grow and develop and learn to provide for themselves. There are a variety of gifts we can send from a pig at £40 to cooking pots £10 each and supporting a local travelling drama group that promotes safe sexual health £25. Therefore can we encourage everyone coming to church to bring at least £1 to contribute to this fundraising effort on the Sundays of 7th or 14th October. If any wish to bring tins only to be distributed via parish office or clergy to door callers that would be welcome too.

Coffee Pot at St Mary’s

More helpers are needed and also someone to co-ordinate the rota. Please see Jan Miller if you are able to help.

Thought for the week by Elisabeth Leicester

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

Scrambled eggs and tomatoes on toast may not perhaps seem like “feasting sumptuously” as did the rich man in the parable. But in comparison to those who eat meagrely once a day, our meals are lavish. Likewise, we may not consider that our salaries or pensions put us in the same category as those whom St Paul describes as rich. But compared to those who live on a dollar a day, we are very well off indeed, And these facts indicate responsibilities. We may not meet Lazarus lying in our driveway but we see him in the guise of the man outside the supermarket saying hopefully “Any spare change?” And if cash seems inappropriate a cuppa or a sandwich never goes amiss. Lazarus also slips past our gates and into our living rooms through radio, TV and publications telling of those suffering through lack of opportunity and dying for want of food. Today’s Epistle and Gospel appear like reflections highlighting the same truths. Let's not speculate on the details of the after life as portrayed in the parable, but have an awareness that our actions today will affect our future life. St Paul advises that we store up the treasure of a good foundation for the future. Our God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment calls us to share His generous nature. And there is plenty of opportunity with harvest appeals, World Poverty Day and Christmas shoeboxes waiting for our response in October.

Collect for today: Sunday 30 September 2007, 17th Sunday of Trinity

Almighty God you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you; pour your love into our hearts and draw us to yourself and so bring us at last to your heavenly city where we shall see you face to face; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now for ever. Amen
