Prayer and Reflection

The parish prays and gives thanks for:

Our thoughts and prayers are asked for: Mary Jenkins, Birdie Hutchinson and Shirley Smith.

Deceased: Irene Jones.

We celebrate the birthdays of Glyn Samuel (8th), Moyra Connolly (9th), Guy Macliver, Sarah Teversham and Sally Cope, and Helen Stammers (11th).

A prayer for our church: We pray for everyone who comes, into our church today: that all who seek you here may find you; and all who find you may serve you day by day. Amen.

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

Homily for Harvest Thanksgiving by Peggy Langdale-Smith

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

Philippians 4:4-9, “Rejoice in the Lord always”, with prayer and thanksgiving to God.

As city dwellers, many of us may not be so aware of country matters, such as harvesting, as those who live and work in the countryside. However we get a beautiful, picture of some of the varied “fruits” of harvest in our churches, decorated with offerings from near and far, as gifts for needy people. Paul, in prison prays that his followers (including us) may produce “the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God” (1:11). His whole letter is full of rejoicing, thanksgiving, prayer and praise, and the sharing of God’s grace with him (1:7). There can be no doubting of Paul’s strength of purpose, dedication and openness, and he knows that his imprisonment has helped to spread the gospel. He asks for gentleness, perhaps not always associated with a “doer”(which is certainly part of his character) — but then there is the linking key sentence: “The Lord is near.” Verses 8 and 9 give us a challenging set of things to take account of and especially to follow up, by doing what he has taught, ending with the beauty of “The God of peace be with you”.

Collect for today: Sunday 7 October 2007, Harvest Festival

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gift of faith that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out that which is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. Amen
