Prayer & Reflection

The parish prays and gives thanks

Our thoughts and prayers are asked for Shirley Smith, Mary Jenkins, Peggy Langdale-Smith and Birdie Hutchinson

We pray for the family and friends of Irene Jones and Harry Sutton, and comfort them in their bereavement.

We celebrate the birthdays of Rebecca Simon and Katherine Barwell (15th), Heather Lindley Philip Simons and Gerald McEvoy (18th), and Sarah Lindley, James Hyde and Kay Burton (20th).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

Thank You For Harvest

Thank you for all who worked so hard to decorate our Churches for the Harvest Festival. Thanks also to Peter Hansell, Janet Thorne and all the helpers for organising a superb Harvest Supper last Saturday. It was good to have nearly 100 people to celebrate the occasion. Thank you for all who have given gifts to the Harvest Help Appeal; with collections from Moseley C of E School and the National Institute for Conductive Education we have raised in excess of £1,000. A final total will be made available. Retiring collection in both churches today.

Samaritan Purse Charity

As last year we are collecting small presents for children’s Christmas shoeboxes. There will be a carton at the back of both churches today and next Sunday 21 October to receive items. Thank You.

Homily by John McKinley

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

All of us, I hope, often perform acts of kindness and do not think “I hope that person is grateful”. In acts of kindness I try to be anonymous but if it is helping some one cross the road, carrying their shopping or telephoning some one who is lonely then it is difficult unless I am like “The Lone Ranger”, that famous “Masked Man”. What upsets me today is not the increasing lack of acts of kindness but the fact that the recipient is surprised that some one has helped them. What does surprise at an act of kindness say about our society? I think it says we have lost our moral compass and strayed from the path of life. King Canute sat on the beach and commanded the tide to go back to teach his courtiers not to be too obsequious. We should sit on the beach of selfishness and command the sea of kindness to go back to show everyone that helping people is an undeniable part of human existence.

I leave you with an old joke probably originating from the late Ned Sherrin. A man holds open the door for a woman.

“Did you do that because I am a lady?”

“No, I did it because I am a gentleman.”

Let’s carry on with Christian acts of kindness no matter how politically incorrect we become.

Collect for today: Sunday 14 October 2007, 19th Sunday of Trinity

O God, forasmuch as without you we are not able to please you: mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
