Homily by Giles Osborne

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

Jesus was born in Nazareth. Everybody knew him as a boy at school, the son of Joseph the carpenter and now he was coming back to preach. There were stories that he had gone loopy, was claiming to be God. But in the Synagogue he seemed to be a model priest. People relaxed. He was not the threat they feared.

But hold on! He was attacking the Jewish establishment. He was saying that their lack of faith was drying up his miracles. The mood in the synagogue changed. They chased him out of the city, and tried to push him over the cliff.

There is a sort of blitzing passion about Jesus that makes him take on people. It is the same with Isaiah: “I am God and there is no other.” There are no half-measures.

Collect for today: Sunday 28 October 2007, 21st Sunday After Trinity

Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ your son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
