Homily by Mary Brookstein

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

Which New Testament reading would you choose for All Saints day? Nothing leaps out as for some Festivals. In the old prayer book, All Saints comes after the spiritual giants who claim a red letter day of their own. Peter, Paul, James and so on. This day seems to collect together all the rest, well remembered or forgotten, who merit the title “saint” because some aspects of their character or personality highlighted something of the nature of Christ himself. Saints don’t have to be pictures in stained glass or stone statues with mitres or halos. You can see them dressed in working overalls, housewives aprons, or just the sort of clothing who happen to be wearing today. The holiness of a saint doesn’t really depend on all round total perfection. The New Testament does not cover up the fact that Peter’s and Paul’s CV’s could have shown some dubious qualities. Many of us will think of very ordinary people who at some stage in their lives have prompted us to say, “he / she is a saint.”

There are many such displaying extraordinary qualities of godliness. They stand out because they are prepared to be different from the norms of their contemporaries, conditioned by personal convictions, ideals, and a vision of truth as is revealed to them by their faith. Today’s gospel reading sets a wonderful, but seemingly impossible standard to maintain. Then we remember the lives and achievements of the saints-capital s or small s and are encouraged and inspired. Let us celebrate them.
