What is your earliest memory? Mine is of the lamplighter who came each day at dusk to light the lamp outside our house. He rode a bicycle and carried his pole on his shoulder — quite a feat because he had only one arm. He lost the other one on a battlefield in France. He was lucky, thousands did not return from that “war to end all wars”. And then I remember the first day of the next war — evacuees, sirens, a lone aircraft — “We shot it down… it was one of ours” (I heard this many years later, by coincidence, from a former member of this congregation). Then Coventry — the glow in the sky seen from Burton on Trent where I was then an evacuee.
In more recent years, a visit to Dresden in February, where the commemoration of their destruction was poignant in the extreme. Lines from a war poem by W B Yeats, “Those that I fight I do not hate, Those that I guard I do not love”, perhaps this is an example of the futility of war.
But what are young people of today remembering — poppies and war films on TV? My hope is that they are remembering the 15,000 people killed in action since the end of the second world war. The young soldier who, among many, is now blind, and the widow and her child shown on the Poppy Day poster, who do not receive full compensation because her husband was not on duty at the time of his death — and many others. “They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old”. (Laurence Binyon)
My prayer is that young people will realise that there are no winners in wars, and that the only hope for our world is for peace, tolerance and love among all peoples. International travel is a great educator.
Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
