One of the key foundations of our vision for the future is that well be a praying community. How scary is that? Particularly for people like me who like action, whose lives seem to be an endless juggling act attempting to keep many balls in the air whilst dodging looming deadlines.
I don’t seem to do quiet reflection and prayer very well at all. In fact, any prayers I might say are more likely to be of the kind said in extremis, in the exam hall for example, “God let there be three questions I can answer.” So how on earth will I fit into a praying community? Will I ever be able to stop racing around and sit quietly and pray? Do I want to? Will I feel excluded and that I don’t have much to offer because I’m not good at prayer? It’s not one of my talents.
I don’t know the answer to this, and others may have different questions and concerns. But I guess that’s just one of the challenges that face us all as we move forward together. We are standing on the threshold of something that is new, exciting and challenging, and yes it is scary. But perhaps there is a diversity yet to be discovered in prayer and how we do it that will surprise, excite and energise us all. Perhaps those who pray don’t always do it on their knees.
Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
