Homily by Jenrifer Holloway

Straight to the point

The Sunday before Advent celebrates Christ as King, and services today reflect this. There are a plethora of hymns that can remind us of the Festival, The Servant King, Rejoice the Lord is King and Onward Christian soldiers are a few. Yet, what is this kingship? Not someone wearing an expensive crown, wielding power and being a signatory to the laws of the nation. Jesus, at his trial, was asked by Pilate if he was the King of the Jews. He answered that he was a king, but not one of this world. He had come to bear witness to the truth of God’s power, love and forgiveness. Everyone believing this truth hears and understands this witness, thus accepting Christ as their King.

25 November is also the day when the hymn writer Isaac Watts is remembered. One of the nation’s favourite hymns voted by the BBC Songs of Praise audience is Watts’ When I survey the wondrous cross. The last verse is,

Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all
.

Once, Archbishop Temple ended a service with this hymn. He told the congregation, “Sing it loudly if you believe the last verse, but sing it softly if you want to believe it.” They sang it softly.

Is this how we celebrate Christ as King? Would we sing the verse softly?

Collect for today: Sunday 25 November 2007, Christ The King

Eternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he might rule over all things as Lord and King: keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
