Fourth Sunday in Advent

Jesus said, “Whoever does what my father in heaven wants is my brother or sister or mother. I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be according to thy word.” Come soon, Lord Jesus!

Jesus is the light of the world. A light no darkness can ever put out.

On Christmas day

Joy to the World. The Lord is come. Jesus is the light of the world. A light no darkness can ever put out.

Advent candles tell their story as we watch and pray,
Longing for the Day of Glory, ‘Come, Lord, soon,’ we say.
Pain and sorrow, tears and sadness,
Changed for gladness on that Day.

Prophet voices, loudly crying, making pathways clear,
Glimpsing glory, self denying, calling all to hear.
Through their message, challenged shaken,
Hearts awaken: God is near!

John the Baptist by his preaching and by water poured,
Brought to those who heard his teaching news of hope restored:
Keep your vision, strong and steady
And be ready for the Lord

Mary’s gift beyond all telling, was to give Christ room
She gave God a human dwelling in a mother’s womb
Who could guess the final story?
Cross and Glory empty tomb

Advent candles tell their story on this Christmas day,
Those who waited for God’s glory they prepared the way,
Christ is with us loving giving
In us living here today!

Thought for the week by Revd Joan Griffin

Straight to the point

The festival of Christmas is a wonderful time of joy and celebration, and I hope we have all been able to use this preceding Advent period to prepare for the event by giving thought to what Christmas really means, Jesus being born, because Christians say that in the life of Jesus we get a fuller picture of God than ever before. That, after all, is why it is worth celebrating his birth.

So Christmas is a festival of God becoming visible in a person, and being a follower of Jesus, a Christian means we too must make God visible. That is why the Church (the family of God) is important, because it makes God visible, or that is what we should be doing. We can help to make God visible in a variety of ways. We can draw people out of isolation into the community. We can help people to pray and be in touch with God. Showing care, compassion, love and forgiveness within families and in society are all ways of making God visible. On a wider level, pressing for justice, peace and truth in national life is important as well.

Jesus takes some of the ‘hidden-ness’ out of God. That is why it is vital for Christians not to stay hidden in our buildings we call churches. As we have tried to do this Advent, we must continue to proclaim God visibly in Moseley, letting our belief and care become open and visible at all times

Collect for today: Sunday 23 December 2007, 4th Sunday of Advent

God our redeemer, who prepared the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son: grant that, as she looked for his coming as our saviour. so we may be ready to greet him when he comes again as our judge; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
