Thought for the week by Neil Greenhalgh

Straight to the point

Who at this point of the winter does not long for the light? The bleakness can seem endless and the few shafts of light that appear so transitory as to be unreal. We can only feel for John The Baptist, entombed in his dungeon surely aware that his life and mission are nearing their end, but fearful that it has all been for nothing.

Yet outside, the light of which he prophesied bursts forth. John sits in the darkness but the lands of which Isaiah spoke are bathed in a new light; a new and definitive call the repentance is proclaimed, and those Peter, Andrew, James and John upon whom the new kingdom is to be founded are called into service. They do not hesitate. The synagogues resound to a new preaching and the sick are healed.

If life seems so dark and pointless as John’s must have seemed to him at this time, it is useful to remember all that his absence from the scene helped bring about.

With faith, prayer and patience, God can guide us to the opportunity He has hidden in our problem.

Collect for today: Sunday 27 January 2008, Fourth Sunday of Epiphany

God our creator, who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness, we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief, shine into the hearts of all your people, and reveal the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
