Thought for the week by Jan Miller

Straight to the point

Candlemas celebrates the "presentation" of Christ in the Temple, the modern day equivalent of a baby’s Christening. Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to consecrate baby Jesus — as a first born male child — to the Lord in line with Jewish custom. Whilst there they encountered Simeon, a righteous and devout man who had been told by God that he would not die before he had seen the Christ. This gave rise to — in my opinion — one of the most moving canticles of the Church — the Nunc Dimittis, in which Simeon confirms he is prepared for death as he has seen God’s salvation, in the baby in his arms.

Candlemas is the last celebration of Christmas, before we are plunged into the sombre season of Lent. We have seen lots of candles in Church over the festive period. I personally love them and like the fact that over recent years they have grown in popularity and now come in all shapes, sizes and fragrances. Whilst visiting a Church in Brittany several years ago, we came across an explanation of the significance of a candle:

It is “warmth”, to welcome others in,
It is “fire”, to extinguish our sins, and
It is “light”, to lighten our path as Christians.

Let us all this Candlemas light one last candle to share God’s love with others, to repent of our sins and to guide us on our path to Easter.

Collect for today: Sunday 3 February 2008, Candlemas

Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
