There are now some red collection boxes at the back of the churches for you to put all your donations for the Church Urban Fund. For more information visit www.church-poverty.org.uk. Our main Lent appeal will be taking place between Mothering Sunday and Easter to support a new Church being constructed in Ghana
After a year’s experiment we now have a new lectern known as an ambo. The name means reading from a raised up position. All our readings and sermons will be delivered from this point. Our intercessions at the main morning service will continue to be offered in the middle of the nave. This provides a more intimate and personal relationship between the congregation, the reader and preacher. The ambo is easy to move and provides both more flexible and greater space on the dais. We hope to make some liturgical hangings to decorate its front in the future.

“Oh No, not the Temptations!” was my first thought on perceiving, (not unpredictably at the beginning of Lent) that this was this week’s Gospel, on which it was likely I would base my piece. What new “take” could there possibly be on the time-worn theme of how we, as Christians, try, for these Forty Days, to emulate Jesus’s ordeal in our own small way, by relinquishing the delights of chocolate, alcohol, biscuits or whatever? Nothing new there, then. So instead I decided to delve into the O.T. references to “Temptation” to link these with Jesus’s encounter with Satan. Take a look first at Mark 1:13 — a quick summary of Matthew’s and Luke’s interpretation, which merely states that Jesus was “tempted by Satan”. No further detail is given, apart from an interesting reference to wild animals and angels helping him. This seems to point to Adam and Eve when they were tempted by the serpent, which by Jesus’s time, had come to be identified with the devil. Unlike Adam, Jesus overcomes Satan and inaugurates the new age where wild animals are no longer a menace and the angels served humanity.
But to get back to Matthew’s version; Jesus answers Satan’s questions quoting the words of Moses, (Deut 8:3) “He made you go hungry, and then he gave you manna to eat … to teach you that human beings must not depend on bread alone, but by everything the Lord says.” In response to Satan’s suggestion that He should throw himself down and be held up by angels, Moses (Deut 6:16) states, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test” — the precise words used in Matthew’s Gospel. Finally, when the devil promises Jesus the whole world, Jesus’s simple response of “serve only the Lord” is a shortened form of Moses’s version in Deuteronomy 6:13. So, as you struggle with your personal sacrifice(s) this Lent, remember the words allegedly uttered not “only” 2000 years ago, but in much earlier Biblical times.
Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, one God, now and for ever.
