Thought for the week by Hansa Shah

Straight to the point

Luke 24:13-35

According to Luke’s Gospel, Jesus appeared a second time after his resurrection, when two men were walking on the road to Emmaus. The striking feature about this passage for me is not that the men failed to recognise the risen Jesus, but that he patiently stayed with them until they did. As soon as their eyes were opened and they recognised him, he vanished from their sight. But this was no ordinary encounter. “Wasn’t it like a fire burning in us…?” recalled one.

Perhaps we too have experienced the presence of the risen Lord, this ‘fire burning within us,’ and then in times of trouble felt as if he had disappeared from our lives. After Jesus’ ascension, the gift of the Holy Spirit was given to all those who believed in him. His disciples had to learn to live without his physical presence, sustained by the power of Holy Spirit. That was expected of them then. It is no different today.

Collect for today: Sunday 6 April 2008, 3rd Sunday of Easter

Almighty Father, who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples with the sight of the risen Lord, give us such knowledge of his presence with us, that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life and serve you continually in righteousness and truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
