Thought for the week by Charles Wall

Straight to the point

Today is our Thanksgiving Sunday when we shall be reflecting on our own personal financial contribution to the health and wellbeing of St Mary’s.

The reading from Acts reminds us of the reaction of those early Christian converts to the work of the Apostles and their subsequent desire for close fellowship and the idea of sharing their belongings with each other. We are told they even sold their property and possessions so they could all share in the proceeds.

I’m not sure our Stewardship Committee would want us to go that far but the principle of fellowship and sharing is as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago.

From my time on the Stewardship Committee I fully understood that we all have different demands on our income but I have always felt that one of those demands should be our giving to St Mary’s. Making a regular financial contribution to St Mary’s is a continuation of the reaction of those first Christians to the wonder of Christ’s Resurrection and his continuing presence with us.

It is important that we continue in good fellowship and have that desire to share with each other that which we are so lucky to have

Collect for today: Sunday 13 April 2008, 4th Sunday of Easter, Stewardship Sunday at St Mary’s

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
