Thought for the week by Giles Osborne

Straight to the point

The Sundays after Easter Day don’t blow a huge trumpet for the Resurrection. At times we see Jesus as an enigmatic figure who in a garden or on the shore of the lake, meeting his friends, usually women, making himself known but soon disappearing.

But by now things have become more direct, no beating about the bush. Each person has to make their own decision and it may cost their blood. Stephen, one of the first deacons of the church offends the Jewish High Court, and is stoned to death. His response is to pray for his murderers.

The most loyal followers of Jesus get hard treatment. Saul (Paul) is revealed as a cowardly murderer. Thomas, Peter and Philip are irresolute weaklings. Was it easier to be a Christian then?

Collect for today: Sunday 20 April 2008, 5th Sunday of Easter

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that, as by your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
