Thought for the week by Jan Miller

Straight to the point

In the Gospel reading for today, following His resurrection, Christ promises his disciples, and us, the Holy Spirit. One of the most moving parts of this passage is, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you”. Many of the world religions offer each other peace as a regular greeting, for example, “shalom” in the Jewish faith. The last part of the Agnus Dei is sometimes translated as “Grant us Peace”, but my preferred phrasing is “Fill us with your peace”. What an amazing, powerful phrase that is; so awe-inspiring and all-embracing.

But what did Christ mean by “His” peace? It is the salvation that His death and resurrection means both for his disciples and also for us; a total well-being and inner rest of spirit, when we are in fellowship with God. In others’ greetings of peace, the world only expresses a longing or wish, but Christ’s peace is real and present if we can but feel it.

Collect for today: Sunday 27 April 2008, 6th Sunday of Easter

God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
