Thought for the week by Peggy Langdale-Smith

Straight to the point

To the Glory of God and Eternal Life, John 17:1-11

I cannot resist stepping back briefly into the previous chapter, which ends with Jesus saying, “In the world you will face persecution, but take courage, I have conquered the world!” He prays to God, who has given him authority, “to give eternal life to all whom you have given him, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” Do we sometimes find it difficult to enter into the words of the Gospels, because we may have read or heard these passages many times before?

Jesus asks God to glorify him in his presence, “with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.” Is this not enough to stop us in our tracks of familiarity, and cause us to think more open mindedly? The readings in our Old Testament about Genesis must be very new in relation to the Lord. It gives us more opportunity to wonder at God’s glory even if we cannot understand it. Jesus sets out what he has done for his disciples; the words he gave them were from God, and Jesus came from him. Another amazing phrase about the disciples is that, “I have been glorified in them.” His final request in this passage is to ask God to protect them so that, “they may be one as we are one.”

Collect for today: Sunday 4 May 2008, 7th Sunday of Easter, Sunday after Ascension Day

O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
