Thought for the week by Pam Laslett

Straight to the point

It was quite terrifying to learn at the recent trial of a terrorist bomber that even though he was a caring and responsible father he was prepared to kill himself and any number of innocent victims. Somehow it made his crime seem even more incomprehensible and horrible. He had meanwhile taken advantage of our liberal systems, founded on our legacy of faith, to raise his family, and presumably hoped to rely on them to care for them after his death. A misguided attempt to be a hero is a generous view of his appalling conduct.

So it was truly rewarding to hear Saira Khan, a writer from Pakistan brought up in Britain, declare that British Muslims are the most fortunate in the world, a great tribute to the culture and ethics of our society. It is also wonderful to learn of the work of Christian Aid and similar organisations, helping poor countries around the world. As Christians we can be proud of them and our share in their work. These two widely differing aspects of life today show how important it is that we show our faith, by co-operating with our neighbours of other creeds to live in harmony both in this, our multicultural city, and the wider world.

Collect for today: Sunday 25 May 2008, 1st Sunday of Trinity

O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
