Thought for the week from Vernon Batsford

Straight to the point

Paul’s message to the Romans states the case quite clearly — he has complete faith in the Gospel, representing, as it does, God’s power to save all who believe. And he really does mean all. The person who is put right with God (is righteous) shall live by faith. That sounds easy enough, so why do we find it so hard. Is it the case that we get bogged down with detail? The study of theology is fascinating but how helpful is it in acquiring or sustaining a faith? Later on in this reading, Paul explains that it is through Jesus Christ we can acquire the free gift of God’s grace. In fact, picking up on some helpful words from Elizabeth Leicester in her homily a couple of weeks ago, it is “just a prayer away”.

Perhaps the secret, particularly for the simpler souls among us, is to accept this as the beginning and end of our faith — to say “This is what I believe” and to leave it at that. Once faith is firmly established at a basic level it will certainly be interesting, and may even prove helpful, to pursue a study of theology and to consider the thoughts of those clever people who are able to write about these things and to explain their significance. In the meantime it is perhaps better to keep it simple.

Collect for today: Sunday 1 June 2008, 2nd Sunday of Trinity

Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are nothing worth: send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever lives is counted dead before you. rant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
