Thought for the week by Christine Hirsch

Straight to the point

After a particularly stressful and spiritually challenging week in many ways, I should have had plenty of material to draw on to inspire the homily. I had also been extremely privileged to have more than one of those special, unexpected chance interactions with people during this week. These had lifted me and allowed me to surf a little across the turbulence, which threatened to tumble me off into the spindrift. But I could not even try to portray any of these special moments in words.

The chance to reflect came during the Saturday evening concert in St Mary’s. The language of music does not require translation or analysis. It can reach out and touch many, regardless of their native tongue or mastery of literature. Music is such a beautiful and integral part of our worship within our church, but can flow out into the community crossing boundaries. And I am sure that I cannot be the only one for whom our church music provides a route to lighten heavy burdens.

Collect for today: Sunday 6 July 2008, 7th Sunday of Trinity

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
