The St Mary’s children’s sub-committee, with the endorsement of PCC, is running two trial family zones in church from now until Harvest Festival. Families with young children can try out both zones during church and school services in the coming months and then comment on their experiences. We welcome the views of the wider congregation too and comment cards are available in each of the trial zones for everyone to use. The trial zones will be sparsely equipped and furnished to give a flavour of how a permanent zone could look. The Sub-Committee will report back to PCC at the end of the trial period with a recommendation based on its findings.
The PCC have discussed the possibility of purchasing new books from legacy money, also it is suggested that it would be easier if both churches had the same book. Therefore, for the next three months, borrowed copies of “Hymns Old and New” will be used on a trial basis. Your comments will be most helpful. Please pass them to the wardens during this period.

Hope is a Christian virtue. St Paul ranks it with faith, only below charity, love being the supreme virtue. In today’s reading from Romans the theme constantly recurs, “The hope that the universe itself is to be freed from the shackles of mortality and enter upon the liberty and splendour of the Children of God” and, “if we hope for something not yet seen, then in waiting for it, we show our endurance”. Of course hope is not exclusively a Christian quality.
Vaclav Havel has called hope “a condition of the soul, not necessarily dependent on external circumstances”. Anne Frank, in her diary found after her death, illustrated this perfectly. She wrote from the attic where she and her family were attempting to hide from the Gestapo “I feel the suffering of millions, yet, when I look up at the starry sky above us, I believe that people are good at heart and that peace and tranquillity will return”.
In our own time so much can cause us to lean towards despair: the prophecies of ecological catastrophe, economic collapse, racial conflict and nuclear holocaust. Despair is a negation of the possibility of good coming out of evil. Therefore, we have to hold on to hope remembering the words of St Paul and others.
Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit to be the life and light of your Church: open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit in love and joy and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
